Welcome to Rescugees!
You ever see the post from shelters about dogs on death row? Overlooked, senior, sometimes young. They’re simply a boring color or have too much energy to be considered taking into a home. I want to change that. And that is how this organization came about. I want to take the pups who is at “times up” and give them one last chance. I want to highlight their excellence, socialize and know what it is like to have friends, and train those who just never got the attention they needed or grew up as a stray. With the proper training, some TLC, and personalized biographies.. I strongly believe we can eliminate the large amount of unnecessary euthanasias.
How did this idea come about? I always thought about the name “Ruffugees”. In the past I thought of opening up another shelter or rescue group, but aren’t there plenty of those? Que Grandpa Milton, he’s the one in the photo above. He came into a clinic that I work at as a stray. A very kind family brought him in to be scanned for a microchip after seeing him standing in the road before AND after they had gone to church. I saw his little self with the mass on his tail and stains on his arms and that nasty breath. I knew if he went to a shelter, he would likely not be adopted or euthanized. So I took him.
BEST DECISION EVER. Don’t get me wrong, it took us some time to adjust to one another. He did not like being touched (grumpy old man). But after getting his mass removed, teeth cleaned, and bathed.. everything changed. Old dogs are easy. They lay around, eat, potty, repeat. House training? Simple. I don’t know if he had a family before (I had over 500 shares on multiple pages seeing if he had a home, with no success.) but quite a bit of accidents happened. Then boom! House trained. He caught on quick. Follows me everywhere. Literally just wants to fall asleep next to me. I could not imagine what would of happened to him if I had not stepped in. He would possibly not be here today. And I wouldn't have my own personal shadow.
How many other dogs need to be put down because “nobody wants them”? They’re too hyper, too old, too this, too that. Completely unnecessary euthanasias. You can’t blame the shelters. They do their absolute best to save each and every pet, but once your time is up.. the shelters don’t have a choice in order to save MORE. So I decided to put a block between “unadoptable” and death.
And Ruffugees was born. We are the block. We are the last chance. We will make these pets adoptable and teach an old dog new tricks. Help us eliminate deaths in potential best friends. Become a part of the solution.
